Our Story

Goodwill was founded in 1902 in Boston, MA by Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and social innovator. In an attempt to meet the needs of the poor, sick and disabled in his own neighborhood, it is said he carried a burlap sack while visiting his friends across Boston and filled it with used shoes, clothing and household items.  His plan of training and hiring those who were in need succeeded. The workers were taught to mend and repair the goods and paid a wage out of the profits from selling the repaired goods at a weekly church bazaar at affordable prices.  The Goodwill philosophy of “a hand up, not a hand out” was born.

Through the years, the mission and scope of Goodwill has grown.  Today, Goodwill focuses on two areas:  1) Offering the job training and vocational rehabilitation necessary for people with disabilities and disadvantages to lead independent lives and 2) collecting donations from the communities it serves to provide employment in the production and retail areas of Goodwill.
