From Application to Offer: Creating Your Resume

The mission of Goodwill West Texas is to provide opportunities to people with disabilities or disadvantages to employment. One way we strive to achieve this is through our four regional Career Centers. Our Career Center specialists offer one-on-one training for resume writing, interviewing skills, job search assistance and more. We asked our Career Center specialists to share some of their wisdom when it comes to building a resume and interviewing for jobs.

Curating the Ideal Resume

According to Forbes, recruiters spend 6-8 seconds reviewing a resume. Resumes need to grab the attention of the employer and ideally lead to a scheduled interview.

Resumes should be no longer than 1-2 pages. A strong resume uses one page to display your experience and qualifications in a concise manner. Keeping the document shorter allows for quick review and understanding by employers. It is estimated that in 2025, companies will use AI to review resumes at a rate of 83% (Forbes). AI scanning reduces the number of resumes employers personally review, leaving applicants dependent on what the technology does and does not find in the document. With the constant increase in the usage of AI, it is vital that your resume includes keywords that pertain to the jobs you are applying for.

Your resume should feature a professional summary, highest level of education, your most significant work experience, and applicable skills, certifications, or other experience. With the limited amount of space, each section should only state the most important information for employers to know about you.

Applying these tips and remembering the advantages of having an impactful resume will help you stand out in the application pool.

Resilience is Essential

When it comes to looking for a job, we want to remind you that persistence is key. While it can be frustrating or discouraging, rejection is part of the process. It’s important to remember that not only are employers looking for a good fit for their company, but you are looking for a job that’s a good fit for you. If you are not invited to interview after applying, it just wasn’t the right fit!

Our next post covers our Career Center Specialists’ best advice for interviewing. With your resume on point and your interview skills up to par, you’re going to secure a job in no time!
