Work Adjustment Training

The Mission of Goodwill–West Texas is providing opportunities for people with barriers to employment.  The diverse population we serve includes people with physical and/or mental disabilities, ex-offenders, veterans, homeless and many others.  Goodwill–West Texas helps people prepare for and retain good jobs.  The mission is accomplished by putting people to work either by assisting with job readiness training or job placement within Goodwill–West Texas or in the community.

Work Adjustment Training (WAT)

Goodwill–West Texas works closely with Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Service (DARS).  http://www.dars.state.tx.us/  DARS refers clients to Goodwill and we provide the training and encouragement they need to be successful.  Many are hired by Goodwill–West Texas long term and contribute to the success of the program. We also provide other services through DARS, including job placement, supported employment and job coaching.  We provide the same services for the WAT for Blind Services division of DARS.

Work Adjustment Training is a Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative (DARS) program designed to determine whether a consumer is suitable for competitive employment in the community. It is defined as: Work adjustment training is a vocational rehabilitation (VR) service that can be provided during an eligible individual’s rehabilitation program to assist the individual in developing work skills, work habits, and job retention skills required to obtain and maintain employment. DARS contracts with Goodwill–West Texas in order to provide these services.

Goodwill–West Texas provides the training and environment for other contracted services for DARS such as job coaching (working one-on-one with the employee at their place of employment in order to know their job responsibilities), job placement (direct job placement in the community by working with the consumer and the employer), and supported employment (for the consumer who is harder to place as their disability makes it harder for them to maintain a job).
